Self-study in Chinese Language and Cultural

First of all, there are reasons why you should learn Chinese. China is the most populated country in the world, with about 1.4 billion people. Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world with approximately 1,197,000,000 people speaking Chinese, of which 873,000 million speak Mandarin, according to infoplease.com. Therefore 15% of the global population speaking Chinese. Learning Chinese offers many benefits to personal and professional growth not least gaining a better understanding of one of the richest cultures in the world. Millions of people travel to China to see the shrines, walk The Great Wall of China and if you can speak Chinese as you travel across Southeast Asia you will have the confidence to speak with the locals in Chinese, you might even be invited into their homes for home cooked food experiencing real Chinese life.

Many people think it is hard to learn Chinese, difficult to study Chinese language well. In my opinion, learning Chinese is interesting, especially at tone.

Now, I have already grasped some study methods. For example, when I studied the word “electricity (电力)”, the image of thunder had appeared in my mind, because of it falling off from the sky, I realized that I should use the fourth tone.

The most important thing is to have faith that learning Chinese is easy and interesting. For example, I learned the tones in the first stage. Some students may find it is hard to distinguish them. The best approach is to think of the tones as musical notes. They go up and down, and speaking Chinese is just like singing with high and low pitches.

Also I developed the habit of previewing and reviewing. Before class, I review previous topics. After class, I then go over all that I have learned so that I keep them in mind.

Moreover, interactive while learning. I behave not just like a passive audience, but instead taking leading roles in class. So I try to be active, energetic, and involved.

In addition, I try to use Chinese as much as I can, not just in class, but also in my daily life. If can talk with Chinese friends, it must be more interested. Maybe this encouraged me to have more power to learn Chinese language. When talking with the native-language people, I grasped many knowledge of oral talking, and had learnt many new words and amount of fashion words. In the world, have none of words you speak, and earn the appreciation of the Chinese people give you, make you more delighted. Language is a tool for communication. According to motivation of every one while socializing, “Do not worry about making mistakes”. As making mistakes and correcting them is a natural process. It’s actually good forevery one learning Chinese.

Furthermore, I take advantage of various resources that are available. This is the internet era, with pictures and videos available online. Watching Chinese videos is beneficial to my listening and speaking skills. A decade ago, people learning language depends on books, now internet had instead of all the books. My most favorite dictionary did not put on the shelves, but on the computer. Sometimes I like searching something in the internet, will encounter something about Chinese poetry, image, movies resources. In terms of the internet, I record all any meaningful movie resources and words resources. In this way, not only convenient for me study Chinese language but do other things.

Not only watching videos but also read Chinese newspapers and novels, particularly “Dream of the Red Chamber(红楼梦)”. We all know that if you want to pass HSK-5, you need to know 2500 common words. So reading newspapers and novels will increase my vocabulary significantly. I also try to write essays in Chinese using characters instead of pinyin. This help me to memorize Chinese characters.

Last but not least, read proper books. I read Chinese hsk and new practice books during self-study.

In short, learning a language is not only limited to words or sentences. Getting to know the culture by reading is vital as well. Knowing the culture means knowing the people better, so that you can get along with Chinese people and improve your social intercourse.

The bottom line is, no matter whether you’re a beginner or advanced student, there’s always something new to learn about Chinese, and there are methods that will help you learn them fast and well. You should not only study hard, you should also study smart! Get to know more about your situation and make yourself a proper study plan with your teacher. This will help you improve your Chinese language skills faster and more efficiently.
So, on the not stopped study process, make me excited is that, my Chinese language level has improved. But I know I still have a long journey to study my Chinese language. I will make an all-out effort.
