Initiated by the Headquarter of Confucius Institute (Hanban), with the assistance of the Chinese embassy in Rwanda, the agreement of establishing Confucius Institute at the University of Rwanda/College of Education was signed and came into effect on 30th of January, 2008, after friendly negociation between Chongqing Normal University “CQNU” and University of Rwanda / College of Education “UR-CE”.
With the guidance and strong support from Hanban / the Headquarter of Confucius Institute, under the leadership of the Board of Directors of Confucius Institute, with the earnest care and support from UR-CE, CQNU and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Rwanda, on June 26, 2009, the Confucius Institute at UR-CE was officially opened.
Confucius Institute at UR-CE in Rwanda is a non-profit institute aimed at promoting Chinese language and culture as well as promoting mutual development and enhancing cultural and academic collaborations and exchanges between Rwanda and China,
Since the foundation of Confucius Institute, it is centered on the UR-CE, supported by two fixed teaching sites, respectively Sino-Rwanda Friendship Secondary School in the Nother province and eastern province, and it based on three points-triangle teaching sites, increased Masaka Hospital Teaching sites, enhanced Butare High school in the southern province and Institute of Science and Technology in the Eastern province. To date Confucius Institute has over 3,000 across the country.
For the past five years, Confucius Institute has natured more than 3,000 students from Rwanda, most of whom have had a chance to pursue their studies in China. As China’s economy growth is no doubt increasing, and a language is key to getting to know a country and its people, the lead of China in the world’s economical arena has helped Chinese language become more and more popular.
Having a Diploma in Education with Chinese Language in Rwanda will add special features to the University of Rwanda in general and the College of Education in particular. And when Chinese language is thought in secondary and primary schools one day, it will need a good number of teachers who know Chinese language and who can teach it properly.
This is a vision that Rwanda might be reaching any time soon, thus getting this preparation within the University of Rwanda’s College of Education, will help built up a strong generation of teachers who will lead the way and help open more windows and doors to the inclusion of Chinese among many other languages spoken in Rwanda.
The course will be well calibrated and at the end, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concept and principles of Chinese language learning. The following exit awards will be given at the end of studies: Diploma in Language Education(Chinese - English, Chinese - French, Chinese - Kinyarwanda, Chinese - Swahili and QTS (Upper Basic).
All our classes from Monday to Friday, either for beginners or advance starts at 6 pm and finishes at 8 pm. You will know which class, and part of the UR College of Education’s campus to go to after registration.
Every Saturday from 6 to 8 Pm, Confucius Institute at UR - College of
education invtes you to join our evening movie program and embrace Chinese culture through its many forms, from martial art to Chinese love stories and much more.

Our martial art courses are open to everyone, all you need to do is to enrol for your spot. Classes Monday to Friday from 5 to 6 Pm.
