CHONGQING NORMAL UNIVERSITY (CHINA) VICE-PRESIDENT VISITS UNIVERSITY OF RWANDA-COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Chongqing Normal University ( China) Vice- President, Professor Chen Zhijun, paid an official visit to the University of Rwanda-College of Education( UR-CE) and was received by the Principal Prof. George K.Njoroge. During the visit, a working meeting took place about strengthening relations between both academic institutions with an emphasis on issues pertaining to teaching and learning Chinese Language and Culture.
Prof. Chen was accompanied by Dr. Cha Zhi, the Deputy Director of President Office, Chongqing Normal University. Dr.Yanzigiye Beatrice, the Director of the Confucius Institute- College of Education, also attended the meeting.
After welcoming the visitors, Prof. Njoroge shared an overview of the University of Rwanda-College of Education. He highlighted current status of teaching and learning Chinese language and culture not only at the University of Rwanda, but across the country in general under the coordination of the Confucius Institute at the University of Rwanda.
He noted that the since the establishment of the CI [Confucius Institute] the number of students studying Chinese language has steadily increased as well as the teaching centres.
‘’ We have not only given chance to the University of Rwanda students, but the program has also been expanded in secondary schools. We currently have thirteen (13) teaching centers where Chinese is being offered’’, Prof. Njoroge said.
While talking about opportunities offered by Chinese Language proficiency in Rwanda, Prof. Njoroge said; ‘’we wanted to give chance to Rwandans who wish to be exposed to the Chinese language and culture. Today, ability to speak Chinese is an advantage; it is a plus for job seekers in Chinese companies. It is also an opportunity for business operators who would need to do business in Chinese companies’’.
Prof. Chen commended the University of Rwanda-College of Education for the good initiatives taken for enhancing teaching and learning Chinese language and culture in Rwanda and promised continued fruitful relationships.
Prof. Njoroge expressed gratitude to the visiting team for the visit to the University of Rwanda-College of Education and for the donation of language lab equipment which will boost teaching and learning of languages at UR-CE.
Before concluding the visit, the Chinese delegation toured Rukara Campus facilities.
